Chronic Pain
Chronic pain impacts the lives of 7.63 million people in Canada (Government of Canada, 2020). Yet, chronic pain is misunderstood by many people and treatment of it can be a confusing and frustrating process.
Understanding why pain persists and learning ways to self manage it can be extremely freeing for those who live with it. I have combined my personal experience of chronic pain with years of compiling research and studying neuroscience into an easy to understand step-wise and holistic program. I am trained in Pain Reprocessing Therapy which is scientifically proven and incredibly successful for reducing pain.
As we work together, you will gain a better understanding of your pain and strategies to manage it. I believe you can get back to doing the things you love without pain holding you back as much as it does now: just like me and many of my clients have been able to!

Concussion
Concussions and post concussion syndrome can impact our lives in such HUGE ways and really prevent us from doing what we need and want to do. I have dedicated a large portion of my schooling, career and free time to studying how to help people with concussions get back to their lives in a meaningful way.
When working with me, I can share recent evidence on best practices for managing concussion, provide cognitive rehabilitation and give you education on why you feel the way you feel and implement strategies to help you reach your goals.
As always, my approach is holistic and functional so we will dive in to all areas of your life that may be contributing to your prolonged symptoms. I can also help guide you through the confusing health care system and make appropriate referrals.

Mental Health
My approach to supporting those with mental health difficulties is functional, holistic and I place a high emphasis on empathy, validation and compassion. I understand the intersectionality of personal and societal factors that contribute to mental health. I believe that our emotions are deeply connected to our bodies as well and seek to help people develop a compassionate relationship with their bodies. Together, we can address sleep, negative thought patterns, nutrition, social engagement, routine, setting realistic goals and rewiring your brain to be more content and self compassionate.
I have training/experience in various modalities such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Non-Violent Communication, Polyvagal theory/Nervous System Regulation, Somatics, Internal Family Systems, Self Compassion Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and I use a combination of these in our sessions. My main goal is to help you feel heard, validated and supported while giving you clear and easy strategies for how to manage what you are going through.

Chronic Fatigue / Long Covid
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) or Long COVID can leave you feeling confused and hopeless. Brain fog and fatigue can make it harder to navigate the healthcare system. It is important to find the right practitioners who understand these conditions and the types of treatments that can help you get back to doing the things you love.
These conditions are neuro-biological but too many clients are told it’s “all in your head.” I work with the latest science to build neuroplasticity and support cellular health and overall physiological functioning. I use a combination of nervous system regulation, brain retraining and enhancing lifestyle factors to help you return to life. We can co-create a gentle program based on your symptoms and meet you where you are at. It is important to know that healing is possible and you don’t have to live with these symptoms forever!
Three Pillars of Recovery- How do we heal?
-
Nervous System Regulation
When we experience chronic stress or trauma, the autonomic nervous system can become dysregulated: stuck in patterns of fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown. This can lead to a wide range of physical and mental symptoms, including anxiety, fatigue, pain, brain fog, memory difficulties, dizziness and emotional overwhelm. As the autonomic nervous system influences all of our automatic responses in the body and our emotions, learning to influence it can radically change your life.
Nervous system regulation helps restore balance by guiding the body back to a felt sense of safety. Through somatic practices, daily regulation tools, connecting to parts with Internal Family Systems and mindful connection to the body, we begin to gently unwind survival responses. Practices like therapeutic writing and clinical hypnotherapy allow for deeper trauma processing by accessing subconscious patterns and reprogramming protective loops with compassion.
Healing happens when the body feels safe enough to soften, reconnect, and trust life again.
-
Brain Retraining
Our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours shape how our brain and body respond to the world. When we experience chronic illness or trauma, the brain can get caught in protective loops, interpreting safe signals as threats and keeping the body stuck in patterns of pain, fatigue, or anxiety.
Brain retraining uses principles from CBT and neuroplasticity to interrupt these patterns and create new, healthier pathways. Using the VIBE method: Visualize, Internal dialogue, Behavior, and Emotions, we consciously shift how we relate to thoughts, sensations, and stress. Over time, this rewiring helps regulate the nervous system, reduce symptoms, and restore a sense of safety and vitality in the body.
-
Lifestyle Factors
Our daily choices play a powerful role in shaping how the brain and body heal. Supportive lifestyle foundations like nutrient-rich food, gentle movement, restorative sleep, targeted supplements, sunlight, and meaningful social connection all send signals of safety and repair to the nervous system.
Equally important is pacing: the art of doing just enough without overwhelming the system. Pacing isn’t about limiting life, it’s about honouring your body’s current capacity and gradually expanding it. This includes planning rest before symptoms spike, breaking tasks into smaller chunks, and celebrating small wins without guilt. When combined with brain retraining and somatic healing, these simple daily shifts can help rebuild energy, resilience, and joy from the inside out.
I also offer Clinical Hypnotherapy

“Zara is not the first occupational therapist I saw but she was the last. Zara is very up-to-date on the latest brain health studies and training techniques, I was so impressed. She was an excellent advocate for me during my recovery process and I can't thank her enough. I wouldn't have made the progress I did if it wasn't for the work we did together - I recommend her to everyone and anyone who is recovering. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
