Understanding ME/CFS

For people with ME/CFS, even everyday activities like shopping, working, or being in busy environments can feel overwhelming. Symptoms often include pain, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and sensitivity to noise and screens, making tasks like driving or returning to work especially challenging.

Cognitive difficulties such as memory issues and psychological stress (like heightened frustration or emotional triggers) can further limit daily functioning. These challenges often interfere with instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), meaning that even simple home tasks may require additional support.

Mind-body approaches, pacing, and occupational therapy can help manage these symptoms. Gentle strategies, like relaxation exercises, mindfulness, and gradually increasing activity can reduce stress, improve nervous system regulation, and support a return to meaningful work and daily activities.

By understanding how stress, nervous system dysregulation, and physical limitations interact in ME/CFS, individuals can take informed steps to improve function and quality of life while respecting their body’s current needs.
